Bad memory may be to blame for computer game crashes

It’s more scary than a horde of zombies backing you into a corner, more terrifying than a huge alien bug jumping out of the darkness; it’s a Blue Screen of Death popping up when you’re trying to play your favorite computer game.

You know the sinking feeling: just as the action’s getting exciting in your favorite game, it locks up, glitches out, or otherwise misbehaves. Reboot, and everything’s fine, for a while.

What’s causing the problem?

It could be a software problem: a video card driver update or a installing a game patch could fix it. But if that doesn’t do it, we suspect your computer’s hardware is letting you down.

It might be due to overheating, but the other likely cause is bad RAM (Random Access Memory). When you’re in the heat of the video game action, this memory is critical. Even a small error in reading or writing can have big consequences. Give us a call and we’ll be happy to evaluate your RAM and other hardware to make sure it’s not buckling under the gaming pressure. By considering all the possible causes, our trained techs will make sure your system won’t let you down when your teammates need you the most.

Help Internet Explorer make a full recovery from a virus infection

You know the signs: your computer is slow. Webpages won’t load. You get strange popup windows, warning you of virus infections. Web searches are redirected to a page of ads that only looks vaguely like Google. Your computer’s got a nasty case of malware.

(We have a treatment for that: our $99 virus special. If you’re trying to fix it yourself, though, read on.)

You might have tried running an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. There are lots of top-

quality free products out there, from vendors like AVG and Avira. Even Microsoft itself is offering a free anti-virus called Security Essentials. This scan might have cleaned up the infection, but if you’re still having problems with Internet Explorer, like search redirection, here’s our favorite fix: resetting IE’s settings.

  1. Open Internet Options, either from Internet Explorer’s tools menu, or from the Control Panel.
  2. In the Advanced tab, click the Reset button. This reset will not affect your favorites (bookmarked pages) but it should reset most everything else to “factory default” and give your browser a fresh start.

Outdated software lets in fake antispyware virus

This "Win 7 Antispyware 2012" scan sure looks official, but don't believe its phony results. (Photo by Martin Burch/Santa Fe Computer)

A customer recently brought their computer into our shop because they couldn’t open any programs; we found a particularly malicious virus that pretends to be a virus removal tool.

By editing the registry, we were able to restore the ability to run programs on the computer. We then used a real anti-virus program to clean up the system.

Happily, the virus caused no lasting damage and we returned the customer’s computer in good working order.

The root cause of the infection was a Java vulnerability triggered by visiting an infected website. Be sure to keep all of your software, especially browser plugins like Flash, Java, and Acrobat, up-to-date to reduce the your chances of getting infected in the first place! We use FileHippo’s update checker.

Computer won’t turn on? Get a good deal on a new power supply

Shop around: we found the price for one model of power supply varied by as much as $40.

If your computer won’t turn on at all, it’s probably a dead power supply. A computer’s power supply is a small electrical transformer that converts the wall outlet’s electricity into the lower voltages needed by your computer. In desktops, it’s located inside the case. A laptop power supply is usually a brick-shaped object attached to the power cord.

If you have a desktop, it’s easy to find a standard replacement. Here’s how to get a good deal on a replacement:

  1. Check to see if your computer is still under warranty. Your computer’s manufacturer will usually replace a failed power supply free of charge under warranty, although you may have to do the replacement work yourself. If you’d like to leave it in the hands of the professionals, call us.
  2. Don’t be sold more power than you need: all but the most power-hungry gaming computers should be fine with a 400 Watt power supply.
  3. Shop on price: here at Santa Fe Computer we’re amazed at the prices others charge for the same model of power supply we sell. You can save money on labor costs too: it’s the same part-swap no matter where you go.

Looking for a laptop power supply? If your laptop won’t charge because of a frayed cord or just a burnt-out power brick, check with us. We have common laptop power adapters in stock and can order a good-quality replacement for you, if we determine the power supply is the problem. Sometimes, a poor connection or a damaged battery can also keep a laptop from powering up.

Is your Mac ready for Apple’s latest OS upgrade?

Mac OS X 10.7, code-named Lion, will be here in July, bringing a new look, and hundreds of new features. If your Mac meets the hardware and software requirements, you can download and install it directly from Apple’s website.

This update requires a 64-bit processor, either the Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon and 2GB of RAM.

You can check your processor and RAM from the About this Mac menu option, accessible from the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen.

If you find that you need more RAM, we can install it for you. Please call us today at 505-795-7253 so you’ll be ready for Lion in July!

Lion also has a software requirement. You’ll need to be running Mac OS X 10.6.6, Snow Leopard. If you don’t have Snow Leopard, we can help you upgrade that as well.

Upgrading any computer also requires a good backup plan in case something goes wrong. We can image your hard drive and create a fully-working copy of your applications and data, so if anything goes wrong with the upgrade, we can “roll back the clock” with no risk of broken programs or lost data.
